2006 Clos Saint-Michel Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhone, France
I decanted this Rhone blend for about an hour before pouring.
On the nose, I got a little spice (licorice), some heavy oak and dark berries—mostly cranberry.
The palate brought some nice, smooth dark fruit in the form of blackberry. The mid palate brought some nice oak and tannins that were as smooth as the Elvis on the velvet. The longer this bottle sat open, the bigger, smoother, and better it became.
We paired this wine with a thick-cut New York strip steak marinated in honey, brown sugar, and some other goodness. The oak and big tannins really paired nicely with the steak.
This is a nice little bottle for about $30. I would definitely give it some time in the decanter before pouring—it seemed to hit a sweet spot about two hours into the bottle. I would absolutely give this one a try if you have a chance.
